As part of the NEPHEWS project, four regional „Info Days” are planned across Africa to foster awareness of opportunities for transnational access to leading European research infrastructures. These events aim to strengthen ties with local research communities and encourage collaborative research.

In June, a team from Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) travelled to Nairobi, Kenya, to engage with researchers from various Kenyan universities. The visit was part of the Eastern Africa Info Day, one of four regional events targeting different parts of the continent. The participating institutions included The Technical University of Kenya (TUK), the University of Nairobi, and Egerton University.

The event featured a workshop titled “Cooperation with Africa – Energy Research at Large Research Infrastructures – Sustainability through Cooperation”, co-organised by HZB. It served as a platform to present the goals of the NEPHEWS project, discuss research challenges, and explore avenues for African researchers to access large-scale photon and neutron facilities in Europe.

These outreach efforts reflect NEPHEWS’ commitment to building equitable and sustainable research partnerships between Europe and Africa, ensuring that scientists from across the continent are informed about, and have the means to participate in, cutting-edge international research opportunities.
