Young scientists from Kyiv gain hands-on experience at ISIS through the NEPHEWS Twinning Programme

Ivan Voiteshenko and Tymofii Nikolaienko from Kyiv National University recently spent a week at ISIS, taking part in advanced reflectometry measurements at OFFSPEC as part of a collaborative project led by Viktor Petrenko (BCMaterials, Bilbao) and Oleksandr Tomchuk (ISIS).

The experiment combined neutron scattering, colloidal chemistry for improving the performance of modern transformers, and high voltages for modelling the electric field in such systems. This approach provided the researchers with practical experience in applying large-scale facility methods to cutting-edge materials research.

During the visit, Ivan and Tymofii also participated in a small-angle neutron scattering experiment on polymer-liquid crystal composites at LOQ, gaining exposure to additional state-of-the-art neutron techniques. ISIS scientists provided guided tours and detailed explanations of the capabilities of various scattering methods, supporting the learning process.

The researchers also visited Diamond Light Source, exploring complementary X-ray techniques and gaining insight into multi-method approaches in materials science.

By the end of the week, Ivan and Tymofii returned to Kyiv inspired and full of ideas for future proposal applications, reflecting the objectives of the NEPHEWS Twinning programme: fostering international collaboration, promoting knowledge exchange, and offering hands-on training at world-class research infrastructures.
