Exploring Neutrons for the First Time: João Santos at ISIS

João Santos, a PhD student from the University of Coimbra in Portugal, recently expanded his research horizons by working with neutrons for the first time. His project brought him to the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source in the UK, where he explored the potential of vibrational spectroscopy and quasi‑elastic neutron scattering to investigate anti‑cancer agents.

This visit was part of the NEPHEWS Twinning Programme, coordinated under the Horizon Europe‑funded NEPHEWS initiative, which includes over 130 twinning actions across 16 facilities. Twinning pairs less experienced researchers or early‑career users with skilled groups at leading infrastructures like ISIS, providing hands‑on access, mentorship, and support—including travel and accommodation funding—for learning advanced techniques
