Advancing Battery Research through Synchrotron Science

As part of the NEPHEWS Early Stage Researchers programme, Georgia Moysiadou, PhD candidate at the FORTH-ICEHT Greece, carried out a research stay at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) between May 18 and May 26. The internship took place at the Institute of Electrochemical Energy Storage under the supervision of Dr. Philipp Hönicke.

During her stay, Moysiadou was introduced to advanced synchrotron-based techniques for materials characterization and worked in the BESSY II experimental hall. She was actively involved in setting up a new experimental facility dedicated to battery research, which provided valuable insights directly relevant to her doctoral work on Lithium-Silicon batteries.

The research stay offered exposure to cutting-edge synchrotron methods and their applications in energy storage studies, while also creating opportunities to exchange knowledge with researchers from different fields within the HZB community. Reflecting on her experience, Moysiadou emphasized: “I’m grateful for this experience at Helmholtz Institute which was also a great chance to connect with fellow researchers working across various fields of energy science and especially to Philipp Hönicke for sharing his expertise and making this experience so valuable.”

This successful internship highlights the importance of international collaboration and hands-on training in shaping the next generation of researchers, inspiring further progress in the field of sustainable energy storage.
